Effective teaching begins with the end in mind and requires consideration of several important questions. Why is this course important? What do we want our students to do as a result of our instruction? Who do we want them to become as they learn? How will we plan activities and assessments to achieve our learning goals?

In this interactive workshop, we will learn principles of backward design and apply these principles to planning courses and programs. Specifically, we will focus on describing the importance of shifting from a content-focused approach to an outcomes-based approach, differentiating various cognitive levels and taxonomies of learning, writing student learning outcomes, and developing learning activities and assessments that align with student learning outcomes.
