Formación Continua invites you to the workshop Transparent Assignments
When? Tuesday September 18, 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p. m.
Where? EN-104, Escuela de Negocios, UFM
Imagine this: You’ve assigned a project to your students. The day the projects are due you realize that the students’ submissions do not meet your expectations. The students really missed the mark! Or perhaps your course evaluation comments include statements such as, “We had to do a lot of busy work,” or “I don’t know why we had to do all of those assignments.”
Too often, a gap exists between the instructor’s intended expectations for an assignment and the student’s understanding of the assignment. Application of the Transparent Assignment Framework reduces this gap and yields gains in three important predictors of student success: academic confidence, sense of belonging, and mastery of the skills that employers value most when hiring (Winkelmes et al., Peer Review, 2016).
In this interactive workshop, we will apply the Transparent Assignment Framework to our courses. We will evaluate and design activities that explicitly state the purpose of the activity in terms of skills and knowledge to be demonstrated, the specific tasks to be performed by the students, and the criteria for success.
The workshop will be facilitated by Julie Estis, Ph.D., Director of the TeamUSA Quality Enhancement Plan at the University of South Alabama (USA).
The workshop costs 50$ per person and is free for UFM professors and TA’s.
